All figures on this page come from the National Institute of Mental Health's summary of the 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, published with a September 2024 update. The survey estimates describe the civilian, noninstitutionalized U.S. population age 18 and older.

Any mental illness includes a broad range of recognized mental health conditions. Serious mental illness is a smaller subset associated with substantial functional impairment. The source defines treatment as inpatient or outpatient treatment or counseling, or prescription medication used for mental health.
